At Lunara Maine Coons, the health and wellbeing of our cats and kittens is our highest priority. Every adult cat undergoes genetic screening and veterinary evaluations before being considered for breeding. These health checks allow us to make responsible decisions and help ensure that our kittens come from strong, healthy lines.
All of our breeding cats are tested through Wisdom Panel genetic screening. This testing helps identify hereditary conditions that can occur within the Maine Coon breed and allows us to make responsible breeding decisions.
Our cats are screened for common genetic conditions including:
• Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM)
• Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA)
• Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency (PKDef)
Genetic testing helps us ensure our cats are healthy and helps support the long-term health of future kittens.
Before any cat is considered for breeding at Lunara Maine Coons, they must complete a series of health evaluations to ensure they meet our standards for health, structure, and overall wellbeing. These evaluations help confirm that each cat is physically sound and genetically suitable before producing future litters.
Our breeding cats are evaluated through the following health screenings:
• Echocardiogram (Heart Screening) performed by a licensed veterinarian to check for signs of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM)
• Hip X-Rays to evaluate hip structure and screen for hip dysplasia
• Genetic DNA Screening through Wisdom Panel to test for inherited conditions including HCM, SMA, and PKDef
• Comprehensive Veterinary Examination to confirm overall health and physical condition
Only cats that pass these evaluations and reach appropriate maturity are considered for breeding.
In addition to genetic testing, our adult cats receive routine veterinary evaluations to monitor their overall health and wellbeing. These examinations help ensure each cat remains in excellent condition before and throughout their breeding years.
Veterinary screening may include:
• Complete veterinary examinations
• Bloodwork and routine health panels
• Ongoing monitoring of overall health and condition
